Eamonn McCabe has written
a respectful send-off for Don McPhee, left, one of the defining photographers of the Manchester
Guardian and for many years a leading light of photojournalism in the U.K. Added is a brief collection of tributes from colleagues who knew him best. Also, don't miss the sympathetic
slideshow with commentary from
Guardian picture editor Roger Tooth.

A beautiful tribute!
Very well done...
Do view the slide show, black and white as it should be.
Thanks for posting this, Mike. I was fortunate enough to view a McPhee exhibition a couple of years ago; you've picked one of his most iconic shots there (alongside his disturbing shot of Enoch Powell on the campaign trail, which perfectly captures the demagogic nature of some politicians in the public mind). I also saw a great show of the work of Graham Finlayson, whose work is less well-known but who was also a Guardian photographer. And for those who like this style, I'd recommend any of the books by Denis Thorpe, a close colleague of McPhee who covered the same territory.
A lovely tribute.
We had Denis Thorpe, his colleague at the Guardian give us a print lecture at our camera club and he was wonderful.
Denis said that the Manchester Guardian gave them free reign to take the pictures they wanted and it shows in Don's images in the slide show.
Sadly those days are gone and hitting deadlines is more important than classic imagery.
He will be sadly missed.
Regards,
Rob.
Lovely comments
Ailsa McPhee, Don's daughter.
Lovely comments, Dad would have been shocked and probably slightly embarrased that people show so much admiration now. He would have found it totally hilarious his name appears next to your home page icon- 'tasteful newds!'
Ailsa McPhee.
